Barcelona midfielder Arda Turan has quit international football following a controversial incident with a journalist.

Turan is reported to have verbally and physically assaulted a Turkish journalist on a plane carrying the national team from Macedonia’s Skopje to Italy’s Trieste and was punished with exclusion from the squad.

However, with his side due to play Kosovo in a World Cup qualifier next week, Turan has made himself unavailable for future selection by retiring from international duty, meaning a new captain will have to be chosen by Turkey manager Fatih Terim.

Turan was reportedly angry with 70-year-old journalist Bilal Mese, confronting him about a much talked about bonuses issue: “Tell me Bilal Meee, were you there? Were you with us when you wrote about the bonuses issue? Who did I ask for money from? Who did ask I for bonuses from? Talk. Come on. Who made you write those reports?”

Turan later took to Instagram to address the reports, failing to reveal what really happened on the flight.

He wrote: “This is not about defending myself, it is only to inform people.

“Criticisms, critics, articles… They are going to support each other. I TOLD YOU! After fans whistled me, I said in my first interview that I will never forget it. After months, I saw one of them on the plane yesterday.

“Who are they? They are people who wrote lies, slander and ignore people’s dignity and family values when we are playing for our own country. And they call this journalism.”

Turan retires from Turkey duty having scored 17 goals in 96 appearances for his country, representing the nation at Euro 2008 and Euro 2016.
